CJ-3A date code locations. This is a work in progress. If you uncover any date codes on your CJ-3A please let me know.

Engine
The engine block casting date is on the drivers side of the block to the rear of the oil pump.

Cylinder head casting part number, compression ratio, and casting date are found in the circled area near the front.



Clutch
The flywheel housing casting date is located on the drivers side of the rear face. The casting part number is located on the passenger side.
                                                                                                                                              




Fuel
Carter carburetor date codes are stamped on the triangular ID tag.



Cooling System
Harrison side mounted radiators
Side mounted radiators were used after late 1949/early 1950. The date code is on a tag or stamped in the front of the top tank. The photo is a tag with the date code which is on the front passenger side of the radiator.

This Harrison date code is stamped in the front drivers side of the top tank, as viewed through the grille.

Water pump casting date, 3 28 50.



Electrical
Autolite electrical components
Distributors, starters and generators have a tag with the Autolite part number and a manufacture date code.


Headlight bulb
This bulb has Nov 1 1951 stamped on the back side.

Transmission
T90 transmissions
The casting date code is found on the drivers side of the housing inside the circle.

The assembly date is stamped on the top surface of the housing. This is the right rear corner of the casting and can be seen with the top cover in place.



Transfer Case
Spicer Model 18 Transfer case
The casting date is on the rear of the housing inside the circle.

The assembly date is stamped on the flange at the top left of the housing.



Axles
Front Axle assembly dates
Pre ~ 1950 the assembly date was stamped on one of the "donut" surfaces of the axle housing, indicated by the arrows in the photo. Post ~ 1950 the date was stamped in the front of the drivers side axle tube in the area circled. These numbers are about 1/8" tall and usually very lightly stamped so they are difficult to read.

Rear axle assembly dates
Pre ~ 1950 dates are stamped on the donuts, the same as front axle dates. Post ~ 1950 the date is stamped on the rear of the passenger side axle tube outboard of the leaf spring (The shiny area where the pencil is pointing). Click on the photo to enlarge.
Ring gear date stamping.
This ring gear is stamped 5 20 50Y. Pinion gears have a similar stamping on the shaft.

Wheels
Wheels  This is the Kelsey Hayes manufacturer stamping on the inside of the wheel. The date is 5 51. Thanks to Mike Hardesty for the photo.

Special Equipment

Harrison heater
There is a tag on the firewall side of of the heater housing with a date code.
